Bowel Cleanse: Your Foundational Step for Gut Healing

Over the years, our naturopathic clinic has worked with countless patients seeking relief from chronic gut issues, and one of the most effective starting points has always been a colon (aka bowel) cleanse. We’ve recommended a variety of methods—from simple, at-home techniques to more advanced options like colonic hydrotherapy. I’ll explain them all.

Over more than three decades of clinical practice, we’ve helped thousands of patients in many countries overcome chronic digestive issues. Time and again, one critical step stands out as the cornerstone of gut health: the colon cleanse. Whether you’re struggling with bloating, constipation, irregular bowel movements, or Candida overgrowth, a well-implemented bowel cleanse sets the stage for profound healing. It clears the way.

Clinically-Proven Method for Gut Microbiome Recovery and Health

Restoring gut health is a journey best undertaken with a structured and logical approach, one that prioritises preparation and progression to prevent setbacks and maximise results.

At our naturopathic clinic, we consistently found for many years that following a strategic sequence of cleansing steps avoids common pitfalls while laying the groundwork for profound and lasting gut health improvements.

Rushing into any cleanse without addressing underlying issues—such as irregular bowel function, sluggish digestion, or constipation—can lead to unintended consequences. For instance, attempting liver detoxification before resolving gut imbalances may result in the re-absorption of toxins into an unprepared and inflamed intestinal environment.

This can exacerbate conditions like intestinal permeability (leaky gut) and worsen symptoms rather than alleviating them.

The Bowel First, Then Gut, Then Liver

Our approach focuses on clearing, establishing, building, and maintaining optimal gut microbiome health before advancing to more intensive liver cleansing. By first supporting bowel regularity and addressing gut dysbiosis, the body is better equipped to eliminate Candida overgrowth, bacterial imbalances, or parasitic infections. Our phased-method also provides an opportunity to re-evaluate our diet and lifestyle habits and choices, gradually eliminating irritants in our life and identifying hidden food triggers that might have gone unnoticed—even by other healthcare professionals.

Clinically, we’ve found this systematic approach to be highly effective, not only in resolving chronic or “mystery symptoms” that have eluded diagnosis but also in helping patients regain a sense of control over their health.

It’s the foundation of our enduring success in delivering personalised care, and a key reason many patients in the past turned to us after other many other treatments had fallen short.

By addressing the bowel, gut and liver first, we create a stable platform for deeper cleansing while minimising the risk of relapsing or complication. This thoughtful preparation allows our body to heal gently, thoroughly, and sustainably—restoring balance to the gut microbiome and improving overall health for the long term.

Let’s now discuss the 3 Steps of the Candida Cleansing (Beginner) sequence in brief:

1. The Colon Cleanse (One Week) – The Page You’re On

A person in a purple sports top squeezes a lemon into a bottle filled with apple slices in a kitchen setting, crafting one of their favorite healthy drinks.

Start with a gentle Colon Cleanse to clear out accumulated waste, toxins, and harmful microorganisms like yeast, bacteria, and parasites. This short cleanse, helps restore a healthy intestinal barrier, boosts nutrient absorption, and balances the gut microbiome. It also helps reduces the chance of sudden die-off. Probiotics, enzymes, and antifungals can be taken advantageously during this stage to clear unwanted yeast, dysbiotic bacteria, and parasites.

2. The Cleanse Diet (Two Weeks)

The Cleanse Diet follows the Colon Cleanse. By nourishing our gut and body with whole foods, we provide it with essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants necessary for healing the gut. During this phase, mindful eating practices are key—listen to your hunger cues, chew thoroughly, enjoy your food. A Cleanse Diet helps us repair our “leaky” gut lining and prepare it for the liver cleanse. Targeted supplements during this phase further cleanse and balance the gut.

3. The Liver Cleanse (One Week)

The Liver Cleanse, the final stage, focuses on detoxifying and revitalising the liver to support healthy digestion and efficient detoxification—key for Candida overgrowth, IBS, or SIBO recovery. This phase activates the liver’s detox pathways, helping the body eliminate toxins, dead yeast, chemical residues, and heavy metals. Antimicrobial supplements, probiotics and enzymes play a crucial role during this third phase of the Candida gut cleanse.

What Is Colon Cleansing?

If you’re experienced with bowel cleansing, you likely know what to expect. But if you’re a first-timer, rest assured—colon cleansing is a straightforward, unobtrusive process that won’t interfere with your work or social life. Done correctly, there’s no need for embarrassment, and no one even has to know. Now that we’ve cleared that up, let’s explore this ancient wellness practice.

Bowel cleansing, also known as colon cleansing, is an age-old method aimed at cleansing the large intestine to promote better health. Often paired with detox programs, it’s a staple in holistic wellness routines recommended by many natural health practitioners. Despite its long-standing use, opinions in the medical and scientific communities remain divided on its necessity and effectiveness for detoxification.

Here is a list of the different resources available for you to guide you through the Colon Cleanse program. Be sure to download and print any relevant documents.

The 4 Benefits Of Colon Cleansing

A colon cleanse is much more than a mere “detox fad” —it can be your clean foundation for restoring digestive balance and harmony. By removing accumulated waste and unwanted microorganisms, we create the perfect environment for gut repair and healing.

  • 1. Cleansing action – bowel cleansing can help remove debris, trapped undigested food particles, as well as improve digestion and the body’s ability to absorb nutrients.
  • 2. Improved regularity – bowel cleansing can help encourage regular bowel motions.  Some people have constipation or irregular bowel movements. It’s possible that doing a colon cleanse will help stimulate bowel movements and provide temporary relief from discomfort.
  • 3. Detoxification support – bowel cleansing can help the process of removing harmful or toxic wastes from one’s body, and receiving extra bowel-cleansing support during this process is vital. Those who support and know the practice of colon hydrotherapy like myself, are of the opinion that it is possible to improve the body’s detoxification processes by removing waste and toxins from the colon. The improvements we’ve seen in hundreds of patients supports and confirms our belief it just works.
  • 4. Microbiome regeneration – By removing accumulated faecal matter, biofilm, fungal and bacterial toxins and by-products, we make it easier for our gut microbiome to regenerate. This allows healthy colonies of beneficial bacteria to grow, making it difficult for those “bad guys” to compete.

Key benefits of a bowel cleanse also include:

  • Eliminating Toxins:
  • Balancing Gut Flora:
  • Improving Bowel Tone:
  • Enhancing Nutrient Absorption:
  • Boosting Immune Function:
  • Preparation For Deeper Cleansing:

Safe and Effective Colon Cleansing

While there are numerous bowel-cleansing methods, we recommend a simple, practical, and sustainable approach. In our program, we emphasise:

  • Natural, Food-based Strategies: High-fibre foods, nutrient-dense
  • Hydration: Drinking plenty of water and other healthy drinks to support proper elimination.
  • Gentle Colon Cleanse Techniques: Like magnesium oxide or psyllium husk-based colon cleanses. (see below)
  • Avoid Extreme or Fad Methods: Like harsh laxatives or excessive fasting, which disrupt gut function.

For those needing additional support, I suggest colonic hydrotherapy under professional supervision, something we’ll soon discuss.

From Doubt to Discovery: A Shift in Perspective

Scientific skepticism is nothing new in natural medicine. Decades ago, the concept of probiotics and the gut microbiota faced widespread doubt. In the 1960s and 70s, the consensus questioned whether probiotics provided any health benefits, I still recall comments like, “How can bacteria be beneficial?” dominating medical conversations.

Fast forward to 2024, and research has firmly established the critical role of probiotic bacteria and our gut microbiota in promoting gut health and overall well-being. In 2019, almost 600 papers were published alone with reference to the history of our gut microbiome.

Even Candida overgrowth, once dismissed, has gained broader acknowledgment, especially over the past decade. Perhaps eventually colon cleansing, including gut microbiome restoration, like probiotics, may follow a similar trajectory. As new studies continue to emerge, our perceptions may well shift.

For now however, like the past one-hundred years, gut cleansing and microbiome restoration remains a key component in natural health practices, offering tangible benefits for those seeking to support their digestive and overall health. (Graph from Lewandowska-Pietruszka et al., 2022)

100 Hours of Research

Dr. Pizzorno, a well-know expert and natural medicine researcher mentioned after 100 hours looking at scientific evidence, he is convinced gut-derived bowel toxins have substantial clinical relevance. Further stating, the more he looks at research, the more he finds, suggesting we are only seeing the very tip of the iceberg.  (Pizzorno 2014)

Before We Go Further, May I Ask A Very Personal Question?

Are you having daily (and easy) bowel motions? Click Yes or No to learn more:

Ready For The Cleanse Diet?

Congratulations if your bowel is functioning daily—that’s fantastic! A healthy bowel is essential for great health, serving as your body’s primary waste disposal system.

However, daily bowel movements alone don’t mean you’re fully prepared for the second module – the Cleanse Diet. If your current diet includes plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables (even daily) but you also regularly consume ultra-processed foods or regular alcohol or soda drinks or sweetened coffee drinks, it’s time to step up your game. Sorry – you’re kidding yourself otherwise.

💡 The Light-Bulb Moment

By committing to the Colon Cleanse for 7 days, you’ll give your gut the time it needs to further detoxify and restore healthier function, setting the stage for improved overall well-being, and it might just be the turning-point you’ve been looking for. For some it can even be a light bulb moment of discovery. There are a few caveats, are you ready?

Here are a few important reminders:

Please avoid all alcohol Alcohol has no place during the Colon Cleanse. To get the best results, we strongly recommend eliminating all forms of alcohol—beer, wine, and spirits—from your routine. Ideally, start cutting back one to two weeks before beginning the cleanse to ease the transition and prepare your body. Additionally, it’s helpful to make other adjustments in advance. Begin drinking more water and reducing your intake of tea, coffee, and sugary or carbonated beverages. If you’re a heavy user of these, tapering off beforehand will make the cleanse much smoother. While one cup of coffee daily is acceptable, be sure to avoid adding any sugar. These small changes will set the stage for a more effective and rewarding cleanse experience. NO sugar and NO alcohol please.

Limit caffeine during your cleanse During this cleanse, minimal caffeine. We recommended that you begin cutting back on coffee or tea consumption a week or two before attempting any kind of cleansing regime. If you are a big coffee or tea (or energy drink) consumer, begin making changes a few weeks before you even start the cleanse. Having one cup of coffee a day is fine but avoid any sugar.

Increase fibre gradually (fruits and vegetables). When transitioning to a higher-fibre diet, caution is key. Increasing your intake of fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, and other fiber-rich foods too quickly can lead to digestive discomfort, including bloating, gas, and stomach pains (Gill, 2021). If you’re not accustomed to eating high-fibre foods, take it slow during the first one to two weeks. This gradual approach allows your gut bacteria to adjust and adapt to the new way of eating, minimising digestive issues and supporting a smoother transition. Patience pays off, setting the stage for improved gut health over time.

Frequent Bathroom Visits Are a Good Sign If you find yourself visiting the bathroom more than once a day during your Colon Cleanse, after switching to a diet rich in natural whole foods, don’t be alarmed—celebrate it! This likely means you’re consuming more fibre, and your bowel function is improving. The goal is to achieve well-formed, easily eliminated stools one, two, or even three times daily. Regular, healthy bowel movements like these are a clear indicator that your digestive system is thriving. Well done!

PRO TIPTake Yeastrix Probiotics for the duration of the Colon Cleanse and during your Candida Cleanse Program. You’ll be wanting to balance and grow beneficial bacterial levels, especially after any bowel cleanse and change to a fresh foods diet. It pays to take probiotics daily during this time of change. We recommend one capsule twice daily with meals. Watch what happens.

If your bowel does not function daily – don’t worry, we can sort this out! If you have problems having at least one bowel motion daily, stay with the colon cleanse for another cycle of one to two weeks. Once your bowel works daily, you’ll want to follow the Cleansing Diet for 14 days, this will give your gut time to cleanse further.

Did you download the Bristol Stool Chart and Poop Guide? It’s a big help.

Please don’t be in any hurry, it can take a few weeks or more in chronic cases to prepare the bowel for a change towards a healthier diet and lifestyle. This is especially important for those who have followed a poor diet and high-stress lifestyle for some time, like many months, especially several years. I’ve seen a thousand or more cases, believe me. I’ve seen them all – including CEOs, bus drivers, construction workers, pilots, farmers, PhD students, deep sea divers, professional musicians, actors and olympic athletes all with one thing in common – constipation.

Save yourself discomfort, we have worked with enough patients over time to know this is the right approach to cleansing the gut. Here are some good tips if you have trouble in the bathroom department:

Take Yeastrix Probiotics for the duration of the cleanse and after. You’ll be affecting your beneficial bacterial levels after a bowel cleanse and diet change. Take probiotics daily during this time of change, we recommend one capsule twice daily with meals.

  • Increase Water Intake: Drink plenty of water daily to keep your bowels hydrated.
  • Add Fiber Gradually: Incorporate fiber-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains slowly to avoid bloating.
  • Include Healthy Fats: Add olive oil, avocado, or flaxseed oil to meals to help lubricate the bowels.
  • Use Probiotics: Take high-quality probiotics or eat fermented foods like yogurt, sauerkraut, or kimchi.
  • Eat Magnesium-Rich Foods: Include leafy greens, nuts, and seeds to support bowel motility.
  • Start the Day with Warm Water: Drinking warm water with lemon in the morning can stimulate bowel movements.
  • Get Moving: Regular exercise, such as walking or yoga, promotes healthy digestion.
  • Avoid Processed Foods: Minimize refined carbs, sugar, and processed snacks that can slow digestion.
  • Try Natural Remedies: Psyllium husk or ground flaxseeds can add bulk and ease elimination.
  • Manage Stress: Practice relaxation techniques, as stress can negatively impact bowel function.

Taking these steps ensures your bowel is ready for the Cleansing Diet, making the transition smoother and more effective.

Constipation – Be sure to read our article on constipation. Make sure you see your health-care professional if you are having on-going problems with constipation unresponsive to home treatments, this is very important.

WATER – We know from clinical experience that most people we’ve seen as patients just don’t drink enough water during their day. Are you like most people? It’s highly likely.

Change your diet – Those who have been constipated for a long time (many months or even years) may need to take a longer and slower approach. The important thing is to make changes slowly but consistently. Change any foods and snacks you know are bad and may be contributing to your continual constipation. Change is the very first step.

Change your lifestyle – Many people with a sluggish bowel or regular constipation can benefit significantly from physical activity and regular movement. Do you work on a computer behind a desk? Do you spend much time walking or being physically active? If you have had a sluggish bowel for ages, you’ll need more change than just food and drink. You’ll have to get more active as well, it is best to incorporate both for lasting results. We’ll discuss this later in Candida Lifestyle, it’s all on this website.

What Do I Need To Complete a Colon Cleanse At Home?

Bowel cleansing can be completed in a number of different ways; however, I suggest you use a powdered dietary supplement, here are a few suggestions:

  • A colon cleansing magnesium powder
  • A vitamin C powder
  • A quality (powdered) colon cleansing product

If you’re considering a colon cleanse, my personal preference is for a magnesium-based cleansing powder. While some products use different herbs or nutrients specifically designed for bowel cleansing, magnesium stands out for its ability to provide a gentle yet effective cleanse. Always follow the instructions on the product label and ensure you stay well-hydrated when taking any colon-cleansing supplement.

The goal of a colon cleanse is to flush out waste, old mucus, and food debris from the large intestine, creating a clean and balanced environment that allows for better nutrient absorption and the growth of beneficial bacteria. This process also helps to reduce the population of unwanted microorganisms in the bowel. It means you’ll need to drink plenty of water, and much less coffee, tea, soda drinks, and especially alcohol.

Finding a natural colon cleanser that is both effective and gentle can be challenging, but magnesium-based powders have proven to be particularly useful for this purpose. They offer a safe, controlled option for cleansing while supporting overall gut health.

How To Do a Colon Cleanse

Use 1 tsp. as one dose. A normal dose of a colon-cleansing magnesium powder is about one teaspoon, but follow the instructions on the container you are using.

We recommend mixing one heaped teaspoon (5 grams) into 250 millilitres (8 ounces) of pure water or your preferred beverage. Stir well and drink immediately.

  • Use a magnesium-based powder containing magnesium oxide and/or magnesium hydroxide. The magnesium gently draws water into the large intestine to help soften stool and encourage a loose bowel movement.
  • Take 1 level teaspoon in a glass of water before bed time for 7 nights. This is a gentle and effective bowel cleanse, and your stools will turn loose and watery. Reduce to every second day if necessary.
  • Digestive noises: Sometimes you may feel and hear your tummy (intestines) rumbling or gurgling. Don’t worry, this is perfectly normal!
  • Water intake: It is vital to consume plenty of water (between 1—2 litres) per day.
  • Include lemon juice in your diet, this will aid in your stomach’s ability to increase output of digestive enzymes. This will increase your ability to break foods down better, improving absorption and health.

The Best Bowel Cleansing Tips

Person holding a glass of water with pills on the table. Water forms an important part of a candida cleanse diet.

Bowel cleansing supplements should be given serious consideration by individuals who are looking for the best outcome when it comes to starting a healthy new diet. A good bowel cleanse sets you up for a successful start when it comes to a new eating plan, especially a diet involving more fresh foods.

Since I’ve not experienced any major issues related to the use of bowel cleansing supplements with patients, I have been recommending magnesium-based cleansing products for many years. I’ve found it is especially helpful to gently cleanse the bowels prior to any cleansing or detoxification programme.

Here are some of my best bowel cleansing tips.

  • Always begin with 1 tsp. of magnesium powder as one dose – A normal dose of a colon-cleansing magnesium powder is about one teaspoon, but you’ll need to follow the instructions on the container of the specific product you are using.  I normally advise to mix one heaping teaspoon’s worth (5 grammes) into 250 millilitres (8 ounces) of water or another beverage of your choosing. After that, stir well and drink.
  • Be mindful of the first few doses – Always start with a small dose for a few days to test the water. No point taking a few tablespoons at first, only to end up with stomach cramps and diarrhoea. I’ve seen it happen, so please take care if you have no experience in bowel cleansing. You can see why some people end up with a “healing crisis” or “detox reactions”, many such reactions are avoidable with patience and caution, especially when it comes to bowel or liver cleansing.
  • Consume a small amount of lemon juice daily in water – After consuming a bowel cleansing product, drink a further glass (or half) of water with freshly squeezed juice from half a lemon. I’ve found the regular consumption of lemon juice is extra-cleansing for the gut.
  • Take on empty stomach – For the best results, take a bowel cleansing product on an empty stomach, first thing in the morning before breakfast may be good for some, but in my experience – most people prefer to take their colon cleansing product at night before bed. In some cases, it may cause you to get up early.
  • High-quality bowel cleansing product – Make sure your bowel cleansing product does not contain any added sugar, starch, wheat, yeast, or preservatives, and it does not have any artificial sugars, flavours or colours.
  • Make sure you drink plenty of water – Drinking extra water for the two weeks you take a bowel cleanser is a good idea, clearing the old and helping to pave the way for colonies of beneficial bacteria.
  • It’s all about hydration for the most effective cleanse – I like to consume broths or soups during my bowel cleanse. Try drinking one litre of water a day to which you have added aloe vera. You can buy liquid aloe vera from a whole foods store, alternatively use a leaf from the plant. Peel the thick skin and drop the pulp in a one-litre container, fill with pure water, drink throughout the day.
  • Useful additions – Aloe vera, psyllium hulls, or slippery elm bark powder are all effective adjuncts.
  • Timing – If you’ve never tried a bowel cleanse before, start on a Friday, that way you’ll have the weekend to recover. It’s not as difficult or uncomfortable as you may think, the aim is to get that bowel working well before your cleansing diet.
  • Have a bathroom handy – It’s important you have easy access to a bathroom for several hours after consuming a bowel cleansing product, and you’ll sometimes find these statements printed on the packaging of the product.
  • Try walking ever day – Keep your bowel working well by walking daily. Walking during your cleansing stages and beyond will ensure your bowel keeps on working well.
  • Daily meditating – When you get up in the morning, spend a few minutes meditating. It’s relaxing!
  • Eat fruit – Eat one avocado, or apple, or pear, or kiwifruit each day. The added fibre along with your increased water consumption is in my opinion the best approach to bowel cleansing. Who knows, it may even become a habit. It’s our habits which define our future, whether healthy or bad.
  • For a prolonged bowel cleanse – If a prolonged bowel cleanse is desired, take the magnesium powder once per day for a week, then once every second day for the second week. It can be taken during your Cleansing Diet also.

The Potassium Broth

A variety of fresh vegetables, perfect for a gut cleanse diet, including carrots, celery, potatoes, onions, and parsley are arranged on a tabletop.

Potassium Broth is a nourishing soup made from root vegetables rich in potassium, calcium, and magnesium. This liquid is perfect for individuals undergoing a bowel cleanse.

It’s also an excellent rejuvenator and tonic for detoxifying and alkalising the body, ideal for those recovering from surgery, extended chronic illness, or recent childbirth.

Use the freshest vegetables you can, preferably homegrown or organic. For an extra boost, add a few tablespoons of liquid whey (the liquid on top of your natural yogurt) during the cooling stage. This enhances digestion and absorption of the abundant minerals in the broth.

Potassium Broth offers many benefits, making it a great choice for overall health and recovery.

Potassium Broth Recipe

  • 3 potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 1 small brown onion, diced
  • 3 stalks of fresh grown celery, thinly sliced
  • 2 fresh grown carrots, thinly sliced
  • A small bunch of fresh parsley
  • 1 large handful of chopped greens such as kale, chard, or leek
  • 2 large cloves of garlic
  • 1 bay leaf
  • Liquid whey

If you’ve made more Potassium Broth than you can consume in a few days, it freezes well. Freeze any portion you won’t use within three to four days. We have frozen blocks of many different broths and stocks.

We make them in bulk and freeze them in small flat containers overnight then vacuum-pack the blocks and freeze them. Here’s how to make a good broth:

  • ·  Place ingredients in 3 quarts (about 3 liters) of clean, high-quality water.
  • ·  Bring to a boil and gently simmer for 20 – 30 minutes on very low with lid on.
  • ·  Strain the liquid, squeeze the liquid from the vegetables and discard them to the compost.
  • ·  For added spice, add a little cayenne pepper.
  • ·  Drink 2-3 bowls of this vegetable broth daily to replenish depleted minerals.
  • ·  Use the freshest organic vegetables whenever possible.
  • The potassium broth also serves as an excellent base for many Asian-styled stir fry recipes.

What Is Colonic Hydrotherapy?

According to the International Association for Colon Hydrotherapy, by introducing pure, filtered and temperature-regulated water into the colon, human waste is softened and loosened, resulting in evacuation through natural peristalsis. (I-ACT – The International Association for Colon Hydrotherapy)

Colonic hydrotherapy is a highly effective and gentle water-based therapy. By gently introducing purified and temperature-regulated water into the colon through the rectum, human waste including bacterial/fungal toxic by-products, is softened and loosened, which causes the waste to naturally release through a natural process called peristalsis.

Some people find it strange, colonic hydrotherapy. There’s nothing strange about the incredible benefits most will experience. Here are several reasons why this therapy is so good for our health:

Some people find it strange, colonic hydrotherapy. There’s nothing strange about the incredible benefits most will experience. Here are several reasons why this therapy is so good for our health:

  • Bowel Cleansing Improves Nutrient Absorption: While there are different colonic hydrotherapy methods used, they all permit a small amount of water to gently stimulate the colon’s peristaltic activity, which releases softened waste, into the colon. In some chronic cases, it may be necessary to repeat the process a few times. Bowel cleansing not only promotes improved evacuation of wastes, it also facilitates an improved colonic absorption of nutrients.
  • Patients Have Experienced Many Benefits: We’ve noticed many benefits to patients who have undergone bowel cleansing through colonic hydrotherapy, especially with conditions like bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhoea, ulcerative colitis, parasite infections, minor haemorrhoids, intestinal toxaemia, dysbiosis, SIBO, and Candidiasis. All these conditions and many more have all been greatly aided by this procedure.
  • Biofilm Reduction – This cleansing effects of colon irrigation reduce microbiome stagnation and biofilm, boosting subsequent beneficial bacterial production in the colon, thereby maintaining harmony of our intestinal flora for optimum health.
  • Mental Health Improvements – I’ve also noticed that a few good colonic hydrotherapy sessions can lead to an improvement in mental health and cognitive function in many. It just works, especially when used in conjunction with a Cleansing Diet as a follow-up, along with an increased awareness in health and wellbeing.
  • Relax When You Go – Are you thinking of going? Then relax, you can wear most all of your clothes during the session, and you will be covered to maintain your modesty. I’ve only ever met health-care professionals with a passion in this field,, you’ll be in safe hands. You will always be treated with decency and respect.

Colonic Hydrotherapy Is Safe And Effective

For most people, attending a colonic hydrotherapy session can be a comfortable and relaxing experience. We have never experienced any problems, in spite of what you may have been told or read online. For the best experience, always consult a registered colonic hydrotherapy health-care professional. Our clinic has referred patients to several we’ve known over the years and they’ve all been wonderful people with a real passion for the work they do

Elimination Of Bowel Toxins Has Clinical Relevance

The elimination of subtle colonic waste build-up is a key objective of colon cleansing, though it’s important to dispel myths surrounding it. Despite exaggerated claims like the colon being “clogged with 50 pounds of waste,” which still circulate online, these misconceptions understandably prompt skepticism from the scientific community.

Bowel cleansing does have its merits when approached properly, despite the misguided statements made by those with limited knowledge of microbiology, intestinal permeability and gut function.

Problems tend to arise when some individuals become overly enthusiastic, opting for excessive or repeated daily bowel cleanses. For example, daily coffee enemas or more extreme home colonic treatments can be harmful if overdone. We’ve observed such cases in our clinic where patients, in their eagerness to cleanse, went way too far. It’s crucial to approach bowel cleansing responsibly to avoid such complications and maintain a balanced, healthy approach to gut care.

Is Cleaning Our Colon A Good Way Of Eliminating Gut Toxins?

Colon cleansing is often used in preparation for medical procedures like colonoscopies, but it’s also promoted by natural and integrative health practitioners for other purposes, such as removing dysbiotic bacteria, yeast toxins, and accumulated waste. Colon cleansing is especially relevant when transitioning from a diet high in ultra-processed foods into a natural whole foods diet.

However, the scientific community largely asserts that our bodies, particularly the digestive system, are fully equipped to expel waste and pathogens naturally, without the need for external cleansing. They argue that colon cleansing isn’t necessary because the body’s own detoxification systems—especially the liver and kidneys—function effectively on their own.

That said, there is increasing evidence that microbial imbalances (dysbiosis) in the gut can play a role in chronic health issues, particularly in relation to colorectal cancer. Studies have shown that specific bacterial species, like Bacteroides fragilis, can produce toxins linked to the early stages of bowel cancer (Purcell et al., 2017). Similarly, strains of E. coli and C. difficile are also known to produce toxins that may impact immune function and overall health (Gagnière et al., 2016) (Sears et al., 2014).

While some critics dismiss the idea that colon cleansing can boost energy, strengthen the immune system, or remove harmful toxins, ongoing research into the gut microbiome suggests that there may be more to this practice than previously thought. Though not universally accepted, these findings highlight the potential benefits of maintaining gut health, even if the scientific consensus remains cautious about colon cleansing as a routine practice.

3 Potential Areas Of Concern With Bowel Cleansing

  • 1. Colonic irritation. Laxatives, enemas, and other substances are used in some colon cleansing methods may carry the risk of causing irritation of the colon. It is possible for some methods to be too harsh and cause disruption of the natural balance of bacteria in the digestive tract, especially the colon. This is why it’s best to work with the professionals.
  • 2. Electrolyte imbalance. Some methods of colon cleansing can be quite aggressive, particularly those that involve excessive use of lots of laxatives. I don’t recommend their use, they have the potential to lead to serious imbalances in the body, which can be harmful.
  • 3. Disruption of the gut microbiota. The microbiota in the gut plays an essential role in the digestion process as well as the function of the immune system and overall health. It’s possible that very powerful (high dosages) or prolonged bowel cleansing techniques may upset this delicate balance. Be sure to take probiotics!

Please don’t be concerned – If you are thinking about colonic irrigation, it’s best to see a registered colon hydrotherapist rather than try and attempt colonics at home by yourself.

Even Our Smallest Health Habit Is Important

It’s important to define ‘healthy’ and ‘unhealthy’ and set specific goals, like eating more vegetables, cutting back on processed foods, limiting alcohol and coffee, focusing on rest, and drinking enough water every day.

Consistently practicing these fundamental habits, especially staying hydrated, can have a stunning impact on our overall well-being. Still, we frequently pursue the latest trends at the expense of neglecting basic needs, such as proper hydration., it’s crazy but true.

This is an important stage for people with intestinal permeability, otherwise known as leaky gut syndrome. This involves our second module – the Cleanse Diet that’s rich in healing, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, pre-and probiotic foods. It’s also free from gut irritants, it’s clean-up time.

The Cleanse Diet also primes our body for the Liver Cleanse, which encourages the releases of toxins stored in our liver, kidneys, and other body’s tissues.

Studies have consistently found that a diet high in fibre, especially in fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, and whole grains is essential for our body to be able to detoxify substances and overall health. These foods aren’t digested or absorbed but help cleanse the gut by supporting optimal intestinal function (Ioniță-Mîndrican et al;., 2022).

Once our bowel is functioning optimally, and supported by a whole foods diet, our body can more efficiently eliminate toxins over a period of time from deeper stores within our body.

After this cleanse, we shift our focus to identifying and removing any potential anti-nutrients, or food allergens or intolerances, repairing the gut lining—a process crucial for those suffering from leaky gut syndrome. It is at this point some individuals decide on advancing the the Candida Cleanse Advanced program, because it includes more information about identifying and dealing with food triggers. This is especially relevant for those with chronic or recurring Candida overgrowth, IBS, or fungal, bacterial (SIBO) or parasite issues.
